Strap Assisted Straddle Press Up

This is a neat yoga strap* wrap that provides assistance for lifting up from a seated straddle. It will pull your legs up and encourage the hip compression needed to lift high off the ground.

Set Up

  1. Pull the end of the strap through the fastener to create a large loop.
  2. Sitting, put both legs in the loop, and grab the top and bottom parts of the loop in both hands.
  3. Pull the loop up high and tuck your head under, so the strap loop goes over to your back, somewhere between your low and middle back.
  4. PLAY! Push up on your hands and feel the tension in the strap pull your legs off the ground. Tighten or loosen as necessary.
  5. Get the strap off by sliding the lower strap layer down under your hips, it will come off easily.

Strap Assisted Toe Tap

The second yoga strapassisted skill is a toe tap, and the set up is actually identical to the straddle press up. The only difference here is that it will be easier to set it up in a standing position.

Set Up

  1. Pull the end of the strap through the fastener to create a large loop.
  2. Standing, put both legs in the loop, and grab the top and bottom parts of the loop in both hands.
  3. Squatting down, pull the loop up high and tuck your head under, so the strap loop goes over to your back, somewhere between your low and middle back.
  4. PLAY! With hands on the ground, push out of shoulders and pull one foot up at a time to hover or rest on fore arms. Feel the tension in the strap help pull your legs up off the ground. Tighten or loosen as necessary.
  5. Get the strap off by sliding the lower strap layer down under your hips, it will come off easily.

Yoga Strap Assisted Stretching

BONUS, this one isn’t a hand balancing pose, but it’s another clever way to use a yoga strap*.

Set Up

  1. Fold the strap in half, and pull the loose ends through the loop around an ankle (also known as a *cow hitch).
  2. PLAY! Try some poses, like Y-scale or scorpion.
  3. Get the strap off easily by pulling slack into the loop.

There you have it, a few more ways to use a yoga strap*!

I’d love to explore other uses for  yoga straps in hand balancing and flexibility. Share any cool ones you know of in the comments, and I’ll include a shout out for you in a post!

Happy hand balancing!
